Senior Software Engineer (Python)

Boston, MA, United States Full Time

POSITION : Senior Software Engineer

DEPARTMENT : Software Engineering

REPORTING SUPERVISOR : Director, Data Science & Analytics

FLSA : Exempt

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS : Overnight travel may be required up to 1-4 times per year

SCHEDULE : Standard business hours

Our team uses technology to improve the wellness of people and reduce healthcare costs for our commercial customers. Wearable devices and sensors installed throughout the home measure daily activities of individuals. A variety of physical parameters are continually collected, aggregated, processed, and monitored. This information is augmented with data from clinicians and business operations. Machine learning, signal processing, and other algorithms are used to interpret data streams into meaningful trends and predictions. The system is implemented by a robust, horizontally-scalable software architecture. Our team is a very small group of talented software generalists who trust each other to take complete responsibility for our own aspects of the product. We work closely with product managers and other business groups to understand and formulate product requirements with freedom to recommend and explore solutions. We design the technical architecture, develop the code, and ensure that it is deployed and continues to function reliably.

You will be working on a socially-fulfilling product on the forefront of technology, which touches the areas of Internet of Things (IoT), data analytics, and cloud-based big data. You will be a major stakeholder in this product, including nearly all aspects of development, deployment, and ensuring highly-robust operation. This requires that you write lots of code for many different purposes. You will be counted on for complex problem solving as well as encouraged to recommend solutions. This role will require work from home, so you must be self-motivated, not-easily distracted, and have the willingness to frequently interact with coworkers using modern cloud-based team collaboration tools.

  • Take ownership of most technical aspects of this product.
  • Work with product managers and other business groups to formulate requirements, plan roadmaps, and suggest creative solutions for features and functionality.
  • Devote a large fraction of your time to writing code, including core product software, offline analyses, and other support tools as needed.
  • Implement and uphold standards and best practices around development processes, coding, and peer reviews. Fully test code to ensure the highest levels of reliability and maintainability. Oversee and mentor less-experienced members of the team and QA personnel to achieve these goals.
  • Work with the IT group to design and evolve a distributed software architecture to achieve high reliability and robustness against infrastructural disruption.
  • Work in a DevOps capacity in collaboration with IT, coordinate major product deployments, continually stay abreast of the health of production software operation, and respond to disruptions as needed. Occasionally work outside of normal business hours in situations that necessitate it, although ideally this should be rare.
  • Break down technical development into tasks, keep track of them in issue tracking software, and work with the team to prioritize, estimate, and schedule tasks for yourself and other team members.
  • Appropriately make tradeoffs between short-term expediency and long-term benefit, maintain a backlog of technical items, and champion internal projects that reduce risk and/or inefficiency.
  • Research and recommend external software solutions that meet a need and would otherwise incur too much effort if developed internally.

Education: Bachelor's degree required

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience outside of school writing code in modern high-level programming languages required
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience writing code in Python required
  • Minimum of 1 year of experience developing software to access and manipulate a modern relational database such as MySQL, PostgreSQL, Oracle, and/or MS SQL Server required
  • Prior experience with MongoDB preferred
  • Prior experience with the Django framework preferred
  • Prior experience working on teams using Agile methods preferred
  • Prior experience working remotely with distributed teams preferred
  • Prior experience deploying software to a distributed Linux computing environment preferred
  • Prior experience with web software stack (back-end MVC framework, HTML/CSS/JS) preferred
  • Prior experience with unit testing methods and test-driven development preferred
  • Prior experience developing software for sensors, Internet of Things (IoT), or machine-to-machine (M2M) applications which involve the transport, storage, and analysis of data from remote devices over networks preferred
  • Prior experience being responsible for developing and maintaining a substantial software product preferred
  • Prior experience overseeing and mentoring other people preferred

  • The ability to adeptly write core Python required
  • Thorough understanding of programming paradigms including object-oriented, non-object imperative, and functional, when it is appropriate to use them, and how to implemented them in Python required
  • The ability to write basic SQL for a complex relational database required
  • An advanced understanding of SQL, including query profiling and optimization preferred
  • Understanding of distributed software architecture design for robustness against infrastructural disruption to achieve high availability preferred
  • Familiarity with Git, JIRA, and Jenkins preferred
  • Solid educational foundation in the theoretical fundamentals of computer science preferred
  • Knowledge of data science and other theoretical algorithmic methods preferred
  • Ability to develop mobile apps, particularly for the Android environment preferred
